old skool

Since the whole collapsed lung thing, I'm no longer using basketball as a means to test my willpower. Repeatedly finding the steel to push myself beyond the point of complete exhaustion did give me a lot of confidence; if nothing else, it made me feel capable of putting up with anything physically. However, the fun of the game got drowned in toughness. I could still spend hours alone in a gym shooting hoops, but it wasn't lighthearted any more.

I'm now getting kicks out of dunking on girls in a mixed sexes competition. We're winning all of our games, my team mates are pretty darn quirky, my sister keeps calling me her hero, and for some reason James Mathison was playing for us last night. Apparently he's buddies with one of the girls on the team.

For the time being, there's no place for the intensity I invested into the game. Basketball's just pure fun right now.
