home away from home

I'm back in Phuket again, after having spent the last however many days around Krabi and its neighboring islands. Crystal clear water, perfect white beaches, adventurous little bamboo bungalows...

Last night I slept on a hammock, outside the second floor of our seaside bungalow. I could see coconut trees bending in the wind above me, lit up by the full moon, and dreaded the feeling of a falling coconut. It was not entirely pleasant, but it was memorable and I did sleep well enough.

Two days ago, after having spent much of the day snorkelling around the small islands to the south of Koh Lanta, my dad and I swam through a limestone sea cave. It was pitch black for about 30 metres. By the time we'd made it through the crack of light at the other end of the tunnel, we found ourselves in a little beach, completely enclosed by vertical cliff faces. Our tour guide said that 45 people were trapped there for two days without food and water after the tsunami hit.

I'd write more, but I can't upload my photos until I get back home so will save my hefty descriptions of what I've been up to for then.

One more night in our favourite little hotel in Phuket, then we're off to Kuala Lumpur for a week...
