shiny happy posers

On Saturday, I saw two guys and a girl dressed in frumpy looking clothes walking down the street together. Their arms were intertwined, and they were carrying funky looking fabric man-bags. I thought, "hmm, they look very bohemian".

I saw them again later on that night. They were watching Jack Ladder awkardly trying to speak to the audience, and they listened to Andrew Bird sing and whistle whilst playing the guitar and violin and glockenspiel. They looked happily whole and secure in themselves. I surveyed the swarm of people again. It didn't take long to spot a lesbian in a red sailor's hat, looking equally nonchalantly indie. A girl wearing a loud blue polka dot dress. An asian guy with wild hair and a a turtle-neck jumper draped over his shoulders...

You could feel the contentment from the crowd as Andrew Bird plucked and bowed his violin. The noises that he made were beautiful. The beauty must have fortified feelings of legitimacy. You could almost hear the thoughts from the crowd: "this is real".

After the gig, I saw the bohemian looking dudes sitting on the ground in the street, smoking cigarettes. They looked cheerful and laid back, but they had uncontrolled little glints in their eyes. The beautiful sounds had faded into the past and weren't real any more.
